About
Built around the step that gets skipped
Signal & Range exists because the distance between geopolitical analysis and a commercial decision is usually left for the client to close — under time pressure, with the wrong inputs, at the worst possible moment.
Know the signal. Quantify the range. Prepare the decision.
The operating sequence of every engagement.
The gap we were built to close
There is a great deal of competent geopolitical analysis available. Very little of it is written for someone who has to decide whether to hedge, provision, reprice, enter or wait. The analysis stops at the market; the decision starts at the company; and the connection between the two — which transmission channel, reaching which line of the business, at what plausible magnitude — is the work almost nobody does.
That connection is not a summary step. It is the analysis. It requires knowing the client's footprint properly, being willing to quantify under uncertainty, and being disciplined enough to show the assumptions that produced every number.
Methodology-led, by construction
We are a methodology-led firm rather than a coverage-led one. What we sell is not access to information; it is a defensible way of getting from an observable development to a decision, applied to your specific position and documented well enough that someone can disagree with it precisely.
That is also why we invest in internal research infrastructure — taxonomies, scenario and trigger libraries, quantitative models, source-grading standards. Those systems exist so that our work is consistent and re-runnable. They are not a product, and clients do not operate them.
How we handle uncertainty
We do not forecast. We construct scenarios, attach probability ranges to them, state our confidence separately from those probabilities, and identify the observables that would cause us to change either. Where the evidence does not support a number, we say so rather than producing one.
This occasionally makes our work less comfortable to read than a confident prediction. It also makes it survivable when the world does something else.
Confidentiality
Client work is confidential by default. We do not name clients, reproduce client material or describe engagements in a way that would make a client identifiable, in public material or in conversation, without written permission. Every example on this site is either constructed for explanation or based on public information, and is labelled accordingly.
The people
Advising a multinational on geopolitical risk requires two kinds of experience that rarely sit in the same person: the analytical training to assess political and macroeconomic conditions properly, and the commercial literacy to know what a CFO can actually do with the answer. We staff engagements for both, and the analyst who does the work is the one in the room when it is presented.
Operating principles
What we hold to
These are not values on a wall. Each one costs us something — a shorter report, a wider range, a client told that a number cannot responsibly be produced.
Relevance before volume
A shorter assessment that reaches a decision is worth more than a longer one that reaches a conclusion.
Exposure before scores
The question is never how risky a country is. It is what of yours is standing in the path.
Ranges before false precision
We would rather report a wide interval we can defend than a narrow one we cannot.
Triggers before surprise
Deciding in advance what would change our mind is most of the discipline.
Evidence before confidence
Confidence is earned by what supports a judgement, not by how firmly it is expressed.
Analysts remain accountable
Every published conclusion has a name attached to it and a record of why it changed.
Working with us
Ask who would be on your engagement
We will tell you before you commit to anything, and the analyst who does the work is the one in the room when it is presented. That is not a service promise — it is the only way the qualifications survive the journey to a board.
- Confidentiality
- Client work is confidential by default. No client is named or made identifiable in public material without written permission.
- Independence
- We are not remunerated by any party with an interest in the outcome of an assessment.
- Scope honesty
- Where the available data will not support a number, we say so before an engagement begins rather than after.
