Four things to know

Pessimism is the norm, and October deepened it

19 of 23 below their reference

Of the markets whose index publishes a neutral threshold or a long-run average, nineteen sit under it.

A broad October drop

Fifteen of nineteen fell. The largest moves: UK −11, Sweden −8, Türkiye −7.1, France −5.

Four above, one improving

Colombia, Indonesia, Canada and South Korea sit above their reference. Only Colombia is also rising.

Recoveries from deep lows

The Netherlands is up 12 points since May, Switzerland and Taiwan 4.2 each, all still well under their thresholds.

October

Fifteen of nineteen fell from September

Monthly change in each index’s own points, for the markets that have already published October. Sizes are not comparable across scales; the direction is.

Europe on a common scale

On the same yardstick, the EU’s big four are all in negative territory

The European Commission builds one harmonised indicator from the same survey in every member state. It is the only like-for-like level comparison in this report.

Coverage

Seven markets have no monthly household index

Quarterly

Morocco (HCP), South Africa (FNB/BER) and the Philippines (BSP). South Africa is filled in monthly with Ipsos.

Every two months

India (Reserve Bank of India), with each policy meeting; Ipsos covers the months between. Saudi Arabia’s Ipsos index is irregular.

No household index

Egypt, the UAE and Kenya. We show the business PMI instead, always flagged as a proxy for demand, not a confidence reading.

Method

Every value comes from a public source and was checked against it on 2 November 2026: 236 readings across 43 series from 32 institutions. We use the official release first and press that cites the institution when its site cannot be read. Nothing is estimated or interpolated; months with no release stay empty.

We use the latest published value, since several institutions revise their seasonally adjusted series. Germany’s NIM/GfK index is placed in its survey month. Canada uses the last weekly Bloomberg Nanos reading of each month. Italy has a series break in September after a change of fieldwork contractor.

For Germany and Italy, position against the threshold comes from the European Commission’s harmonised series, since their national indices publish no neutral point.
